Executive Summary

Criterion Institute has an important opening within our leadership for an experienced accountant/comptroller. The role will ensure the quality of financial transactions and reporting, develop our financial well-being, and play a leading role in financial decision-making. The comptroller will also work closely with our founder and senior management to ensure we uphold our values and standards of excellence in everything we do. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the cutting edge of the field of gender lens investing, to provide strategic financial input, leadership, and other external-facing operations for the leading think tank in the field. Criterion is ideally looking for someone for at least 16 hours a month or 4 hours a week for this position and offers a flexible, asynchronous remote work environment with the opportunity to join the team as an employee or contractor.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership and Management

This role presents an opportunity to work closely with Criterion’s finance team, program leadership, and multi-talented external audiences to ensure management receives sound financial advice carried out with excellence, efficiency, and in alignment with our values. Within that, this role will be responsible for:

  • Developing and forecasting budgets.
  • Implementing finance and accounting policies and procedures.
  • Creating quarterly reports and presenting them to the board.
  • Determining the effect of potential business decisions on financial policy.
  • Collaborating as company representative with business partners and consumers.
  • Cooperating with funders and supporting functions across the company.
  • Ensuring prompt and accurate month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Preparing timely financial statements.
  • Reporting variances.
  • Overseeing accounting operations such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger entries.
  • Ensure the proper use of Accruals and Deferrals as Criterion Institute operates with multiple contracts with various payment arrangements.
  • Ensuring compliance with company and statutory requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business or finance (MBA or CPA is a plus but not required).
  • Proficient with QuickBooks and familiarity with Salesforce.
  • Have operated in an environment that utilizes accruals and deferrals.
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to create simple formulas in Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills translating financial concepts.
  • Ability to overcome barriers and create pathways past obstacles.
  • Comfort externally representing Criterion and our values among executives, board members, and industry leaders.

Salary

Salary is commensurate with experience.
